Crafting Your Vision: The Art of Custom-Made Jewelry
The most personal piece of jewelry you'll ever own is the one made specifically for you. Not found in a display case, not ordered from a catalog — designed together, built by hand, and finished to a standard that a mass-produced piece can't reach.
At Loni Design Group, custom work is the core of what we do. Here's what that process actually looks like.
It starts with a conversation
Custom doesn't mean complicated. Most commissions begin with something simple: a photograph, a sketch on a napkin, a piece of jewelry the customer loved that broke or was lost, or just a feeling — "I want something that feels ancient but looks modern."
We ask questions. What metal are you thinking? What's the occasion? Will this be worn every day or saved for special moments? Is there a stone with personal meaning? Is there a budget we're working within?
The answers shape everything that follows.
Material choices
The metal you choose isn't just an aesthetic decision — it affects durability, color, and how the piece ages.
- Sterling Silver — classic, bright, affordable, and easy to rework if the design evolves
- 10k, 14k, and 18k Gold — available in yellow, white, and rose; higher karats are richer in color but softer
- Gold Plated — a cost-effective way to achieve a gold look over a silver or base-metal foundation
- Platinum — the most durable option, naturally white, and ideal for high-wear pieces like engagement rings
We'll tell you honestly which material fits your design and your lifestyle, not just what sounds impressive.
Design and modeling
Once we understand what you want, we move into design. For complex pieces, we use 3D modeling software to produce a digital preview before any metal is touched. You see the proportions, the profile, the way the stone will sit. We revise until it's right.
For simpler commissions — a repaired heirloom, a resized band, a custom pendant from a shape you've sketched — we may move directly to wax carving or fabrication. The process scales to the complexity of the work.
Casting and finishing
The approved design goes into wax (either hand-carved or 3D printed), which is then cast in your chosen metal using the lost-wax casting method. From there, the piece is cleaned, filed, refined, polished, and — if applicable — set with stones.
Stone setting is one of the most skill-dependent stages of jewelry making. We set everything in-house, which means we control the quality of the seat, the tension on the prongs, and the final alignment.
What you can customize
Almost everything:
- Metal type and karat — yellow, white, or rose gold; silver; platinum; gold-plated
- Stone choice — diamond, moissanite, birthstone, semi-precious, or no stone at all
- Engraving — inside a band, on a pendant back, or as a design element on the surface
- Dimensions — heavier or lighter, wider or narrower, longer or shorter
- Finish — high polish, matte, brushed, hammered, or a combination
If you can describe it, we can usually build it. And if something isn't feasible, we'll tell you why and offer an alternative that captures the same spirit.
